At A Dog’s Journey, we are dedicated to strengthening the bond between canines and their owners through trust-based training and positive, science-backed methods. Our approach emphasizes relationship-building as the foundation for effective training, fostering communication, confidence, and mutual respect.

We guide teams through a series of American Kennel Club (AKC) evaluations, including the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Community Canine, and Urban CGC. These benchmarks not only assess progress but also promote well-rounded, socially responsible canine behavior.

Our training services span a wide range of needs, including basic obedience, crate training, leash manners, and specialized service dog preparation. At the heart of our mission is a simple goal: to empower owners and their dogs to grow together as a unified, confident team but most importantly to enjoy every step of the journey they share.

Typical Training Sessions

*Before beginning any training, a required consultation is scheduled to assess your goals, your dog’s needs, and to design a customized training plan. This initial meeting ensures that we build a program tailored to your team's specific journey.*

Session Format:
Each training session typically lasts between 60 to 90 minutes. During this time, we focus on the objectives outlined in your personalized training plan, while also reinforcing the necessary skills aligned with AKC (American Kennel Club) standards. Our aim is to maintain both progress and engagement through structured, positive reinforcement techniques.

Week One – Foundation Work:
Training begins with foundational behaviors, such as "sit," taught using a combination of treat luring, verbal cues, and physical prompts. This method introduces the concept that good behavior yields positive outcomes. Over time, we gradually reduce food-based rewards, transitioning to verbal praise and physical affection, helping your dog respond to everyday reinforcers.

Enrichment & Breaks:
At A Dog’s Journey, we believe that rest and enrichment are vital to a balanced learning experience. During session breaks, dogs are engaged in activities like scent work, problem-solving games, or simply play. From brain toys and frozen treats to creative enrichment tools like pool noodles in a box, we make sure every moment is purposeful and rewarding.

Weekly Check-Ins:
To ensure transparency and continued progress, clients are asked to complete a brief questionnaire each week. This helps us refine the program to better meet your needs. Detailed notes are kept throughout your training journey, and upon completion, you're welcome to receive a full copy of your dog's progress notes.

Evaluation Policy:
Please note that while Andrea Mason serves as your dedicated trainer, all formal evaluations for AKC titles or certifications will be conducted by a separate, qualified evaluator. This ethical guideline ensures objectivity and upholds the integrity of the evaluation process.
